Meditation to make you younger!

What if I told you there’s an anti-aging trick that can make you look and feel years younger?  And it’s free! Too good to be true?  Well, it might be free but it does require a bit of work on your part.  

I’m talking about meditation, but don’t let that put you off, you don’t need to be spiritual or a Yogi to give it a go! Think of it as relaxation for the mind.  ”The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it!”. 

Taking as little as 5 minutes out a day to focus on your breathing can give you immediate results, such as reduced stress and anxiety levels, lower blood pressure and enhanced happiness but it’s the long term effects at a cellular level that can improve your health, potentially adding years and improving brain function.  

If you’re interested in the science behind it I can highly recommend this book, ‘The Telomere Effect’, by Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn (Noble Prize Winner) and Dr. Elissa Epel.  It goes into great detail to reveal the science at the heart of ageing and reveals what you can do to help reverse it.  

Here’s my tips for a 5-minute meditation:

  • I use an app called ‘Insight Timer’, it’s free and you can either use it to time your session (you can choose your own ‘gong’ sound to end it) or you can choose a guided meditation, there’s 1000’s to choose from
  • I use a circular breathing technique, taking an in breath through the nose and breathing out through the mouth ‘haaaaaa’, trying to make the out breath longer than the in breath. 
  • If you have the time, sit comfortably and close your eyes, otherwise you can do this whilst out and about, in a queue at the checkout, waiting at the petrol pump, in the bath, anywhere!
  • Set yourself a challenge, can you do 14 days in a row? If you can, I guarantee that you will feel better.
